Carles Puyol: inspired leadership in practice

Carles Puyol was one of the best and most well known Spanish football players ever. His glory wasn’t solely based on his great playing skills but merely on his personality and extraordinary fairplay qualities.

Some examples:

  • It was Puyol who asekd his colleague Abidal to lift “la liga trophy” in his place as the captain. Abidal had been recently suffring from cancer.
  • Another time Puyol asked Ronaldinho, then playing for the competing club Milano, to join the FC Barcelo pre-match photo. No one has seen this act of friendship ever before.
  • When his collegues or even himself were hardly attacked or slapped on the pitch, he fighted for a fast settlement of any disputes.

For me, Puyol doesn’t just stand for fairplay.
He is a true inspired leader.

Even under high pressure and in highly demanding situations, he doesn’t just act highly professional, but he stays true to his high human values: respect, honesty and appreciation.

Interestingly enough, he encourages his collegues, peers and millions of people watching his play to show this love and affection for other humans. For me, this is true inspiration by leadership – or let’s say, the true practice of inspired leadership.

These actions made him not just become one of the best football players ever, but a legend of inspiration.

Well, no one wondered when he was nominated a member of the board of his loved FC Barcelona right after he had finished his career in 2014.

Inspired leaders are always found.
